Choreography is the planning and creation of all the little sequences of a dance; the elegant, incremental steps that when put together make up a work of art.
A choreographer is the person that dreams up, plans, and brings to life the movements they see in their mind, placing their art in the real world for everyone to witness.
Choreography is a podcast about the little steps that go into creating art, and the choreographers behind them.
For the foreseeable future, Choreography will focus on exploring art and media in the Canadian landscape.
Canadian art is fascinating for so many reasons. At times it’s innovative, introspective, and inimitable. Other times it’s seemingly lost, derivative, and obsessed with impressing the rest of the world.
In the five episodes of Choreography, we’ll talk to Canadian creators and explore things like what it’s like creating in Canada, the country’s artistic inferiority complex, what’s unique about our art, and plenty more. We’ll celebrate, critique, spotlight and champion Canadian content across music, film, TV, gaming, comics, and more. In brief, picture the CANADALAND of pop culture.
MEET YOUR HOST
Corey van den Hoogenband has been exploring Canada’s arts and culture landscape as a journalist, podcaster, and video host since 2014. He’s been an Associate Editor at The Varsity, Canada’s largest and most read student newspaper, a freelance writer for Exclaim! Magazine, an online contributor to Toronto radio station Indie88‘s website, and the Events Editor of the popular hyper-local Toronto publication, blogTO.
These days Corey works less in traditional arts journalism in favour of working in the video game industry, but is still fascinated by all of Canada’s creations and creators.
He’s currently enrolled in a Digital Communications Strategy & Social Media course at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies, and this podcast series is equal parts passion project and culminating assignment!
Corey has done his best to impartially spotlight Toronto and Canada’s noteworthy art from multiple disciplines and communities, but he’s aware that like anyone, he carries his own biases on what works catch his eye most frequently. That’s why each episode of Choreography will feature a guest, not only to be interviewed by Corey, but also to bring forward their own picks for what Canadian content you ought to be checking out.
